I
wear my share of hats
Back in the day
We used to wear kangoes
pimp-hats
and ballcaps with tags on the back
I wore those as long as the wallet let me
Now I wear the hats
that God has dealt me
I have worn all sorts of hats
From Judas to Pharisee
Peter, Thomas, Pilate
And Zebedee's seeds
The repentant thief
To the Lord's left
Begging to remembered
Kickin it in paradise forever
I have worn
The hat of the centurion
With faith
so amazing
I have been straight crazy
Blazing
With anger and guilt
For hemoglobin flowin
Down the face
And the head
And the back
And the wrists
And the feet
It is finished
It is complete |
I
have worn all sorts of hats
But
I have never
Worn a crown of thorns
Even one with a tag on the back
I have never been attacked
My back
Has never been flogged
Dogged
With spit in my face
Denied justice because of my place
In the local belief system
That is something
That I still wrestle
To understand
After 10 years of communion |
We all
wear our share of hats
Sometimes
As signs of solidarity
So let's keep the unity
As we
Close our eyes
And bow our heads
We meditate on
First century lynchings
And raising from the dead
Let's meditate on
The race of grace
Our Lord's disgrace
Then lifted up
To the highest place
